Dan Kainen is an inventor, entrepreneur, designer, skilled fine and commercial artist, and photographer, who can conceive and develop a concept through all phases to a finished, market-friendly product. He has honed a unique way of working, combining inspired problem solving ability with  optimal engineering, and appealing aesthetic design and packaging, as well as broad experience with,  and knowledge of, manufacturing techniques and materials.

In art, he is an accomplished draftsman and painter, and can produce excellent visualizations that communicate an idea in feeling as well function

He is experienced in a range of technical disciplines, including optics,  lighting fixture design and manufacture, ultra-precision motion control, injection mold design, writing patents, screen and litho printing techniques, digital electronics, photographic and digital imaging (especially lenticular imaging), and holography.

He is a "people person", easy-going, and gifted at getting the idea across, as well as listening to, and working with new ideas.

Marketed Products - Current                                       BACK

  • Motion BookTM – Patented lenticular viewer manufactured and sold by the Motion Picture Card Co (2007 to present) Injection-molded optical display device with many applications, including CD/DVD case, educational toy, gift, premium/promotional item.
  • Framing Projector – Snap-on, retrofit for MR-16 fixture (Halo Lighting # L 1955 - since 1985) used the inherent focusing properties of a certain type of quartz lamp to take the place of a condenser lens, so that a single lens in a snap-on barrel created a mini stage-spot type of beam from an ordinary track fixture. It was copied by Lightolier, but is still the smallest, most efficient, and lowest cost device of its kind.
  • Custom Lighting—Various lighting fixtures, designed and produced in limited runs, by Holoframe Corp (1980’s to present)

Marketed Products - Past                                                 BACK

  • “Light Grid” – Reflected light system; hexagonal array of gimbaled mirrors splits one light beam into many, individually directed beams (1980’s to 2000)
  • Laser Light Show Systems – 1976-80  Laser Arts Co, scanning projection systems
  • Screen printed fabric products—Custom Tee shirt printing for T-Space Co, Calvin Klein (1975-1980)
  • “Moiré” Line – Perforated metal lighting fixtures marketed nationwide by Illuminating Experiences (1990’s) See http://www.holoframe.com/fixtures.htm
  • Copper Moiré Lighting Fixtures – Various copper mesh lighting fixtures, marketed in small runs, by Holoframe Corp (1980’s to present) http://www.holoframe.com/fixtures.htm

Prototypes built                                                                  BACK

  • Sun-tracking mirror—Quadrant photocell with servo-motor actuation. Mirror tracks and keeps sun reflected to one spot
  • Digital voice synthesizer – Take-counter for Sound One Corp film sound studio, (1980 – built with Radio Shack logic chips, before such things were commonplace)
  • Orthogonal (x-y) beam-steering equipment – High speed digital control and wave shape projection, for laser light shows and display applications. Also for large beam diameters (up to 4” beam diameter)
  • Digital “Rhythm” Lock – Unique, rhythm-based lock. User taps blinking, “beat” button to input a distinct rhythm, and lock will unlock when user duplicates that rhythm closely enough (1978, built from Radio Shack logic chips)
